Suicide of An Old Citizen

Deputy Sheriff Danforth Petty, of this city, committed suicide this morning by cutting his own throat with a razor. He has for some weeks manifested symptoms of insanity, and the act was not entirely unlooked for. He was missed by his family soon after breakfast, and was found dead in the loft of the barn upon his premises about ten o'clock. He had evidently expired within an hour, and all the surroundings showed that the act was deliberate. The deceased was one of the pioneers of Michigan, having settled in this state in 1833. He resided for a time in Detroit, and was proprietor of the old Railroad Hotel in 1836, the the Principal Hotel in the city. Mr Petty was a man most estimable character, thoroughly honest and universally respected. He leaves a wife and large family of adult sons and daughters, among whom r. Courtland J. Petty, formerly of Detroit, now of this place.
