Charge Against Two Men Arrested Near Clarkston
Clarkston, Mich, Nov 8 - Last Thursday evening Grace Stuart, the 9-year old daughter of William Stuart, of near Ortonville, was assaulted by two men, both supposed to be living within a few miles of the place. It appears the father, during the day had punished the child for some trifling offense, which offended her so much that she decided t go to the village about 6 o'clock. Having arrived at the village and made some purchases she was about to start home, when two men stepped up and offered her a ride, saying they were going by her home. She refused, but was placed in the buggy by one of the men and the horse (stolen for the purpose) was put under a run out of town while the other drive his own buggy. When a rig was met on the road the girl was thrust into the bottom of the buggy and covered up with a robe. When about four miles north of Clarkston, the other rig appeared. Afterwards the little girl was placed in the stolen rig and the horse headed north. Having lost her way she inquired at a farm house for her grandpa's, who she thought lived in the neighborhood. After considerable difficulty she finally reached home. The matter was kept quiet for a day or two pending an inquiry. The descriptions of the two men given by the girl finally led to the arrest of Fred Benjamin and Clifford Battery. Deputy Sheriff Wells taking the to Pontiac Saturday evening. Both men claim to be able to prove an alibi. Public feeling is running high against both men, while much sympathy is expressed for the child and her parents, who are very respectable people.
