Diamond Robbery

Mrs. N. E. Deull's Gems

A robbery, probably the biggest ever committed in this city, was reported to the police yesterday. Diamonds orth not less than $2000 are missing from the Hotel Hodges. They were in the property of Mrs. Deuell, wife og N E. Drurll, the proprietor of the hotel. The intrinsic value of the gems was great and to Mrs Deuell they were priceless, as some of them were keepsakes and heirlooms. The same was true of the jewelry, which included a gold watch she has had for many years. Mrs. Deuell ent to her room and noticed some disarrangement she looked around. When the drawer of the dresser which contained the precious stones was looked into, she was startled to find all gone. Search failed to find them and it was apparent a robber had been in the room. She hastened to inform Mr. Deuell and together they searched and tried to solve the mystery of the absence of the gems. There was no solution other that that a robber had been in the place and got away with the rich prize without leaving a clue so far as could be seen. No time was lost in getting the matter in the hands of the police, and Marshall Toynton visited the room. He was perplexed and sought assistance from a detective of wide experience from out of the city. Hard work is being done on the case and it will be kept going until every hope is gone that the robber can be apprehended and the stolen articles recovered. Mrs. Deuell is grief struck over the loss of her treasures. From the way the room was entered, it is believed the robbery was committed by someone familiar with the house and the room and knew where Mrs. Deuell's jewel case was kept. The officers working on the case are telling no one of their plans or what information they have, and have advised those who do know anything about it not to give out any information as it may interfere with their case. No stranger was seen about the house and no one accustomed to be on the floor where Mrs. Deuell's room is can give any information to aid the police and detectives. They are working in the dark, but as the guilty one is discovered in all but very few such cases as this, they have hope that the criminal will be brought to justice. The advice of the detectives to those who know the details in the case to keep mum is being heeded very closely. Rings and other jewelry and a gold watch which were with the diamonds were not taken. It is supposed the thief was alarmed and hastened away before time was taken to get the other things of value.
