Wanted a Burial - Charles Mittledorf

He left money with his neighbor and then went to the home of the next where he wanted to barrow a shotgun. Woman, woman, lovely woman, is alleged to have been the cause of an annoying interruption to the tranquility of Charles Mittledorf's life. Charles is a farmer at Elizabeth Lake and is well known here. Sunday night his behavior was so unusual that he was placed in jail. In a few brief hours, he created more excitement then peaceful Elizabeth Lake has seen in many a moon. Early in the evening, Mittledorf went to the home of one of his neighbors, Mr. Baker, where he deposited $100 with Mr. Baker, asking him to keep it until Mittledorf's body should require the services of an undertaker. Baker was considerably surprised at the strange request, but Mittledorf seemed very sincere. From Baker's , Mittledorf went to the home of August Beham, another neighbor, where he asked to borrow a shotgun. Beham refused, and Mittledorf, seeing the gun in the corner of the room, made a grab for it and succeeded in getting his hands on it. Beham also had hold of it, and a lively tussle ensued, in which Mittledorf as victor. With the gun in his possession, he started homeward, threatening to shoot Behm if he dared to interfere, and a short time later Beham heard a shot. Thinking that Mittledorf had committed some rash act, he went after Baker, and the two drove down town for the sheriff at midnight. Sheriff Belt and Constable Cloonan accompanied them to Mittledorf's, where Mittledorf was found very much the worse for too frequent visits to a barrel of hard cider. Monday, Beham swore out a warrant for the arrest of Mittledorf on the charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm. Mittledorf was arraigned before Justice Mathews, Wednesday, and his examination was held in part. The examination will be concluded later. Mittledorf has always been considered a man of peaceful disposition. His recent strange conduct is alleged to have been caused by a woman.
