Cracked The Safe
Burglars made a raid on the P. O. & N. Office. Thursday night of last week, safe breakers entered the paymaster's office at the P. O. & N. depot, and blew open the safe, securing for their trouble about $30 in nickels and cents. The safe was completely wrecked, and the burglars also attempted to blow open the vault door. The combination was off and appearances indicated that the burglars had been scared away before completing their work. The office presented a very disorderly appearance when its occupants arrived Friday morning. Papers and fire proof lining from the safe door were scattered about, and everything was topsy turvy. The force of the explosion which wrecked the safe was so great that a window still where the door struck upon opening, was fractured. An entrance to the office as gained by prying open the door. The tools used by the burglars were secured in the neighborhood of the depot. A wrench was taken from the pump louse nearby, and another belonging to Dave Allen of Baldwin Street, besides other tools from the section house. Appearances indicated that the burglars were novices, and made bungling work of the job. The money taken was that used in keeping conductors supplied with change. An expert from Detroit was secured to open the vault. He expressed contempt at the bungling work of the burglars. Sheriff Belt discovered a package of papers which had been taken from the safe in the section house.
