Gay Bathrick's awful crime
The Murderer In Jail Awaiting Examination
With the exception of the Blackman tragedy, it is probable that nothing more shocking to the common feelings of humanity has ever occured within the borders of Oakland County than the murder of Summer Bathrick by his son Gay, on Thursday evening of last week. Sumner Bathrick was a man of prominence in his community and well known throughout the county, and whenever known, he and his family were highly respected. On this account the moral shock caused by the terrible tidings everywhere was the more profound. Aside from the father and the son there were no witnesses present and hence some things connected with the case will be forever shrouded in mystery.The Death-bed statement of the dying man and that made by the son constitute all the direct evidence in the case. The facts seem to be these; Sumner Bathrick a man of about 60 years of age, lived with his wife and younger son upon the farm about half a mile from the village of Novi. The only other member of the family are E. R. bathrick, the older son, now a successful real estate broker of New York City, and a daughter, Mrs. Donaldson, who lives near Flushing. This daughter, Mrs. Bathrick was visiting for a week. Last Thursday morning the son, Gay, announced his intention to go hunting
