History Drayton Plains
Village of Drayton Plains

Early History

The village of Drayton Plains was laid out along the Saginaw Trail, an old indian trail that passed through southeast Michigan, heading north and south running from Detroit to Saginaw. The first settlers came to the area, in what would later be Drayton Plains, around 1822. About 1858 the railroad came through the area, the offical village was platted out in 1860, it was at that time, a perfect spot for a village, a river for water power, which already had mills built on it, and a railroad.

The village was laid in the SE 1/4 of section 10 and part of the SW 1/4 of section 11 in Waterford Township, primarily between modern day Sashabaw Rd and Hatchery Rd. along Dixie Hwy. The part of Drayton Plains that lays in section 11, was first purchased by William Carlisle, 80 acres, the W 1/2 of the SW 1/4, on Feb 3, 1832. The land in section 10, was purchased by two brothers, Austin and Harvey Durfree, who came from Palmyra, Wayne County, New York, came to Michigan in 1822, and purchased the E 1/2 SE 1/14 of section 10, 80 acres on Jun 13, 1822, this would later become the heart of the village of Drayton Plains. There is a mention of a man named Foster having been in the area, which is now Drayton Plains, he is even mentioned in the The History of Oakland County, published by L. H. Everts & Co, in 1877, no first name given, he is mentioned in other histories of Drayton Plains, some have him listed as Horatio Foster. It is possible that he may have stopped here for a while, but never purchased land here. There is a Horatio Foster (1789-1854) his wife, Ann Pleydell (1786-1855), who purchased land in Independence Township, he may have been the man mentioned in the history books about the area. There have been no land records found for Mr. Foster, as a first land purchasers, or soon after, or for any person with the last name of Foster, in the area around Drayton Plains. Another person mention, in the The History of Oakland County, was Jonathan Perry, this is another individual that is no record of having made a land purchase, near Drayton Plains or in Waterford Township, however there is a Jonathan Perin or Perrin, purchasing land in Waterford, the E 1/2 NW 1/4 of section 11, 80 acres on Aug 17, 1831.This Jonathan Perrin may be the same person as Jonathan Perry mentioned in the history books.

The brothers, Austin and Harvey Durfee, on Jan 10, 1832, sold their land in section 10 of Waterford Township to Thomas Drake, of Pontiac for $1400, and comprised of the SE 1/4 and the E 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of section 10. Austin and Harvey Durfee moved to Livonia, Wayne County, Michigan, where Hervey and his wife died, Austin and his family moved to Carlton, Barry County, Michigan, where they lived out the rest of their lives.

Thomas Jefferson Drake was born Apr 18, 1799 at Scipio, Cayuga County, New York and died Apr 20, 1875 in Pontiac, Oakalnd County, Michigan. Thomas is the son of Elijah Drake and Abigail Stoddard. Thomas was married twice, first Dec 17, 1826 at Rchester, Oakland County, Michigan to Martha M. Baldwin, born Apr 20, 1795 and died Jun 28, 1839 Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan, the daughter of Nathaniel and Susanna E. Baldwin Thomas married second on Apr 19, 1843 at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan to Eveline H. Talbot. Eveline was bornin 1815 New York City, New York, and died Jul 15, 1859 at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. She was the daughter of Theodore F. Talbot and Elizabeth Truxton. Thomas Drake was also a member of the Michigan Territorial Council 1828-31, Member of the Michigan State Senate, 3rd Dist. 1839-1841, Presidential Elector for Michigan in 1840 and 1856, Whig candidate for US Representative from Michigan's 3rd Dist, and Delegate to the Republican National Conventionfrom Michigan in 1856. Thomas and both of his wives are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery., in Pontiac. Thomas Drake sold the land in section 10 to Daniel Winidate on Jul 9, 1835. Daniel Windiate was born in about 1787 in Berkshire, England and died Dec 11, 1843 in Drayton Plains, Oakland County, Michigan He is the son of William Windiate and Jane Winter. Daniel married first on Sep 2, 1809 at Monk, Sherborne, Hampshire County, England to Mary Moss, who was born in 1788 and died about 1820 in Hampshire County, England. Daniel married second on Feb 3, 1823 at Drayton, Berkshire County, England to Martha Mundy. Martha was born in 1795 n England and died Sep 14, 1842 in Drayton Plains, Oakland County, Michigan. Daniel and his second wife, Martha, are buried in Drayton Plains Cemetery. Daniel had three children with his first wife, and ten children with his second. Daniel and his family came to America in 1835.

Daniel Windiate along with his son-in-law, Thomas Whitfield, made improvements to the area. The river where it crossed the Saginaw Trial was too shallow, and with the lake in which the river flowed from, about the same level as the river at that point, could not provide the power needed for a mill, they decided to build a dam a little further south. The dam was built in 1835, flooding some of the land to the north, and with the slight drop of the river at its exit, it would give them the power they needed for the mill. In 1836 Daniel Windiate and Thomas Whitfield built a mill, which contained three stones. Thaddeus Seeley stated in his History of Oakland County, published in 1912, at that time, the Drayton Mill was in ruins.
Daniel Windiate, before coming to America operated a mill in England, which he called the Drayton Mill, for this mill he choose the same name. In the early days before the mill was built, the area where the settlement was formed, was called the Plains, then after the mill had been built, some was calling the area Drayton, later people started to use both names, and was calling the settlement Drayton Plains, even before the village was offically laid out in 1858.

Daniel Windiate and his son-in-law didn't stop the business venture with just the mill, around 1838 they build the Drayton Hotel, which was located on the south side of the Saginaw Trail, across from what is modern day Sashabaw Rd., the old hotel was gone by 1940. There is a land transfer dated May 28, 1841, transfering the land to his son William and sons-in-law, Thomas Whitfield and William Beasley. Daniel Winidate had another son-in-law, William Beasley, who started the first general store. After Daniel's death, it appears that his son William bought out the rest of his siblings, and operated the mill and hotel for a few more years. On Feb 20, 1856, William sold the land, mill, and hotel to Lewis Dunlap.

Lewis Letts Dunlap was born May 8, 1814 at Pulteney, Steuben County, New York, died Mar 27, 1878 at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan, at the age of 63 years. Lewis is the son of Thomas Dunlap and Elizabeth Letts. Lewis was married first to Nancy E. Seeley, who was born Mar 24, 1822 at Ovid, Seneca County, New York, died May 24, 1863 in Oakland County, Michigan. Lewis married second to Elizabeth H. Davies. Elizabeth was born Jun 13, 1840 in England and died Dec 29, 1928 at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. Lewis and both wives are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Pontiac.

In 1858, Lewis Dunlap, hired Charles Merryweather, to survey the land and lay out the plat for the village. Also in Jun of 1858 the Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad purchased a stripe of land, for $10, to continue building the railroad that was coming north out of Pontiac, on its way to Flint. By 1860, there was a rail depot built, with C. A. Albertson as station master. The old depot was located on the north side of the tracks, just east of Mill St. (Hatchery Rd.), in 1908 a new station was built, on the south side of the tracks. The Drayton Plains Depot was a flag stop along the route, and remained active, until Jun 25, 1960, when passenger train service stopped along this run. The depot was torn down February 10-11, 1965. From what I have heard the only thing that survived was the sign. Bruce Montney, a resident of Holly, Michigan, had a replica of the Drayton Plains depot built in his backyard, about 1995 he donated it to the Waterford Historical Society, had it taken apart and reassembled in the historical village off of Hatchery Rd. On Oct 20, 1862, Lewis Dunlap sold the land where the Drayton Mill was to James Carhart. James Carhart was born Jan 28, 1813 in Worcester, Otsego county, New York, died Dec 6, 1887 at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. James is the son of William Carhart and Mary M. Brakeman. James married Oct 14, 1840 in Pontiac, Michigan to Sarah Buck. Sarah was born Jun 17, 1817 in New York State, died Jul 6, 1904 at Pontiac, Michigan. She is the daughter of Elijah S. Buck and Mary Richardson. James Carhart was the one who built the octogon house at 127 W. Huron St. in Pontiac, the house was demolished in 1929. On Apr 13, 1864 James Carhart sold this land to Morris Green.

On Jun 6 1872 Lewis Dunlap sold for one dollar to Harvey D. Judd, 10 aces of land , which was part of the SW corner of the SE 1/4 of section 10. This appears to be the land just west of the mill. On that same day, Harvey purchased then Grist and flouring mill, house and barn in Drayton Plains, from Mary Smith, who was acting as power of attorney for Mary Jane Durrant, Louisa Ann Dunning and William J. Smith, for $3000. Harvey D. Judd, was born abt 1846 and died Jan 2, 1873, and is buried in Drayton Plains Cemetery. Harvey married on Dec 27, 1870 in Drayton Plains to Sarah C. J. Smith. Harvey only owned the mill for about 6 months, it appears he may have been killed at the mill, the cause of death was "caught in cas. mill." After Harvey's death, his father Daniel, received permission from the court to sell his son's property off. Harvey and his wife, Sarah C. J. Smith, (listed as Katie Smith in their marriage record), had a son that was about a year old at the time of his death. His son was John Smith Judd, was born Jan 27, 1872 in Drayton Plains. His grandparents, Daniel and Sarah Judd, adopted the child, and had his name changed to John Harvey Judd. Harvey's widow, Sarah, on Jan 21, 1873, signed over her rights and claims of the mill and property, to Harvey's father Daniel M. Judd. Shortly after, Danel M. Judd deeded the land to Theodore Judd and John K. Judd. In Seeley's history of Oakland County, published in 1912, he states that the Mill was in ruins, I have been told that the mill was taken down about 1920.

In the winter of 1837-38, a frame one room schoolhouse was opened, being taught by Lewis M. Covert, this was the first schoolhouse in dist. 8 of Waterford township. The school was located just east of the cemetery along the Saginaw Trail. In 1865, a one room school house was built on the east side of Sashabaw Rd. just north of Dixie Hwy. The school was used as a school until 1920, when a larger brick building, next to the one room school, had been built. For a few years in the 1930s-40s, it was used by the Salvaion Army as a meeting house. In 1965 the school was donated to the Oakland Historical Society, images can be found here of the school, and moved to their site next to the Moses Wisner house in Pontiac. The newer school over the years had had a couple of expansions, it had been stopped being used as a school in 1977. For a few years, the school was used as the Waterford Senior Center. Currently the building is up for sale.

William Beasley, the son-in-law to Daniel Windiate, opened the first store in Drayton Plains. This is most likely the store that was located on the corner of Mill St (Hatchery Rd) and the Saginaw Trail. Later this would be the site of the Drayton Inn. William Beasley was born Jul 16, 1808 at East Hendred, Berkshire, England, died Dec 25, 1897 at Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois. William married to Mary W. Windiate, born Jul 29, 1810 at Arborfield, Berkshire, England and died May 31, 1891 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. In 1850, William Beasley's son Stephen, was the Tavern keeper at the hotel. There was another store located next to Beasley's store to the south and next to the railroad tracks that was built around 1860, by Paul Schwesinger. Paul Schwesinger was born Mar 13, 1834 in Saxony, Germany, died Jan 25, 1908, he married Phillapina Arndt, born Oct 17, 1823 in Germany, died May 30, 1906 at Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan. both Paul and Phillapina are buried in Woodmere Cemetery, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.

First blacksmith shop in the village was opened by Moses Southard. Moses was born Oct 13, 1783 in Vermont, died Jan 14, 1873 in Drayton Plains, Oakland County, Michigan, He is the son of Benjamin Southard and Hannah Crane. Moses married first on Jan 22, 1807 to Cynthia Wilson, born Jun 30, 1786 at Bridgeport, vermont, died there on Aug 12, 1820, she is the daughter of Samuel Wilson and Chloe Reynolds. Moses married second on Aug 16, 1821 Bridgeport, Vermont to Phebe Crane, born abt 1793 New Jersey, died Jan 4, 1883 Flint, Genesee County, Michigan. Phebe is the daughter of Asa Crane and Abigail Young. Moses had two children with his first wife Cynthia; Philura and Alphonso, Moses also had two children with his second wife Phebe; Harriet and Alvin. Moses first purchased land in Waterford Township on Oct 15, 1834 from Thomas and Martha Drake, it was the S 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of section ten. On May 7, 1842, Moses and his wife sold 35 acres which was part of the SE 1/4 of section 10 for $1200, which on Dec 20, 1843, the land is conveyed back to Moses Southard for the sum of one dollar ($1). This piece of land in 1872 was owned by Moses's son Alvin A, Southard. The 1877 business directory states that there were two blacksmiths in the village of Drayton Plains, one being Thomas Hugill and the other was Abner Kelly. Thomas Hugill born in England died Dec 17, 1907 in Drayton Plains, Oakland County, Michigan. Married Matilda McBride, who was born Dec 29, 1825 in Ireland, died Jan 27, 1901, both Thomas and Matilda are buried in Drayton Plains Cemetery, in unmarked graves. The 1880 census of Waterford township, list Thomas still as a blacksmith. Abner Kelly, the other blacksmith, was born in Apr 1846 in Pennsylvania, died Apr 29, 1905 in Duplain, Clinton County, Michigan, he married Mary, who was born Feb 4, 1851 in Ohio, and died Jul 18, 1926 in Clinton County, Michigan, both are buried in Riverside cemetery, Elsie, Clinton County, Michigan. Abner Kelly was a blacksmith in Nankin Township, Wayne County, Michigan, before coming to Drayton Plains. Sometime between 1880 and 1900, Abner moved to Clinton County, Michigan. In 1850 there were two blacksmiths in Drayton Plains, Marcenas Allen, who was born abt 1816 in Pembroke Center, Genesee County, New York, died Jan 6, 1853 in Waterford Township, Oakland County, Michigan and is buried in Oakl Hill Cemetery, Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. The second was Peter Drum. Peter was born about 1836 in New York. He is the son of John and Elizabeth Drum. Peter's mother Elizabeth, died in 1857 and is buried in Drayton Plains Cemetery, his father had moved to Shiawassee County, Michigan after the death of his mother. Peter's father, John, died in 1880 in Shiawassee County, his will does not list Peter. Peter Drum by 1857 was living in Shiawassee County, Michigan, when he sold his land in Waterford Township.

About 1841, James Swartz opened the first shoe and boot store. By 1850 John had left Drayton Plains and moved to Pontiac and opened a store there.

In 1850 John Mahony was a miller in Drayton Plains, by 1880 he moved to Milford, Oakland County, Michigan. John Mahony was born abt. 1826 in Ireland. He married Sarah, she was born abt 1830 in Ireland.

The 1872 map of Drayton Plains shows that J. H. Linabury owned the Drayton Hotel and the stables across the street. The blacksmith shop was along Saginaw Trail at the river to the north, with the wagon shop next to it to the north. Te schoolhouse is on Sashabaw Rd, on the east side, just north of Saginaw. There were two stores one on the corner of Saginaw and what is today Hatchery Rd., the second was next to it on the south side, next to the railroad tracks and owned by Paul Schwesinger. The train depot was located on the north side of the tracks, about 500 feet east of Paul Schwesinger's store. Along the tracks on the south side was the wheat house, by 1896 this building is not shown on the map. Before 1872, the post office was located in the general store on the corner of Saginaw Trail and what is now Hatchery Rd., the 1872 map shows the post office located in the train depot. In 1896 the post office is back in the store. The flouring mill is still located on the river to the south of town.

The 1877 business directory list the following businesses in Drayton Plains; Peter Davidson, Mason; Thomas Hugill, Blacksmith; Daniel M. Judd, Flouring Mill; Abner Kelly, Blacksmith; J. H. Linabury, Hotel Propr.; Paul Schwesinger, shoe, boots and grocer; John VanCampen, produce and express agent; Sherda and son wagonmaker; William Walker, millwright; and William B. Way, Produce.

John Sherda was opearating the wagon shop in Drayton Plains by 1860, he was born abt 1810 in Switzerland, married Sarah, who was born abt. 1810 in Switzerland. John and Sarah had the following children; Sarah, born abt 1841, Charles, born abt 1843, Lucy, born abt 1846, and Joseph, born abt 1851. All of their children were born in Switzerland. In the early 1870s, John Sherda sold the wagon shop to Charles Girodat. Charles and his father operated the wagon shop for a few years, later selling it and moved to Detroit and opened a wagon shop there. Charles was born Feb 9, 1844 in Germany, died Jul 12, 1900 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, at the age of 56 years 5 months and 20 days. Charles's death certificate states he was buried in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan.

In the 1880 census shows that Alice Clark, 31 years old, was teaching school. Paul Schwesinger, was now a farmer, he was the owner of one of the grocery stores. Joseph Girodat was a blacksmith, his father, John Girodat and brother Charles Girodat were wagonmakers. Jennie Van VanCampen was teaching school. Mary E. Bacon, teaching school.

The 1896 map of Drayton Plains only has a few businesses listed, the store and post office, the train depot, the mill and the Pittmans and Dean ice house.

Shown on the
1908 map, a new train station was built on the south side of the tracks and the first train station was demolished, a new ice house was built a little west of the old one along the shore of Loon Lake, with its own railroad spur leading up to the building.

The old store that was on the corner of Mill St.(Hatchery Rd) and The Saginaw Trial (Dixie Hwy), which was started by William Beasley in the 1830s, had in its later years changed to the Drayton Inn, with lodging upstairs. In the 1940s it was called the Oasis and operated until 1949 when the business was purchased and the building razed. A new building was built and in 1950 opened as the Commodore Hotel, with a restaurant-bar and lodging upstairs. After the Commodore, in the mid 1960s, it became the Keg and Anchor, in 1968 it changed hands again and was Ben Hur restaurant bar and grill, about 1971 it changed again, this time to Jason's, keeping the same theme as a bar-restaurant. After Jason's it became Socco Casa restaurant, for a couple of years, around 1975 again it changed, to the Oceania Inn, a chinese restaurant, which I believe was the longest running business in the building. After Oceania Inn, there were a couple of failed resturants in the building, one of which was the Prime 7 Steakhouse, and another not really being open for all that long because of COVID. in the fall of 2022, another attemp is being made for another bar-restaurant called the Drayton Station, which is still under renovation in the early part of 2023.

On Dixie Hwy. across from the old Commodore Hotel was a building built in 1926 by Dr. Cobb, Two stores were located in the first floor of the building and six apartments were on the second floor. the first two stores to be located here were the Kroger grocery store and the Keego Hardware. The Kroger grocery later moved north on Dixie Hwy to the corner of Dixie Hwy and Frembes Rd. The Keego Harware moved Sashabaw Rd. just north of Dixie Hwy. on the east side, which later became Elden's Hardware, which is today McCourt's Music Shop. for a few years The Soda Shop occupied part of the lower floor. The building that Dr. Cobb built, had Dixie Hwy running along its front and Loon Lake at its back. It was used until the late 1960s and was closed, from what I have been told, was because of sewage problems, the building was condemed and remained vacant for many years. The building was razed between 1974 and 1980.

Drayton Plains original plat spanned along the Saginaw Trail, a little north, from what is now Sashabaw Rd to about 1/4 mile south of Mill St. (Hatchery Rd) and 1/8 mile south along Mill St. For the sake of this article, to bring things into the modern times. the limits of Drayton Plains will go along Dixie Hwy, the old Saginaw Trail, at the south end, starting at Waktins Lake Rd. and the northern point at Shoreline Blvd. To the north running along Walton Blvd, and on the south along Hatchery Rd. Below is a list of business along Dixie Hwy in by their addresses, and a brief description of they currently are and what they have been over the years. One thing to keep in mind, as time progressed, some lots were combined and some were split, which made some addresses to change. As we have seen these types of changes, during our own lifetime.

Across from Watkins Lake Rd, was what was known in this area as Sandy Beach. Sandy Beach was there in the 1940s, at that time about 1/2 the size of what it was later. One of the biggest draws to the beach, other then swimming, was the concerts and dances that were held there during the warmer months. until about 1966 there werea few houses and a building in front of Sandy Beach along Dixie Hwy, I am not sure what the business was, they were razed when Sandy Beach expanded. In the mid 1970s, Sandy Beach closed, a condominium complex called, Adam's Landing, now occupies the site.
