In Feb 1896, Helen Bennet of Ortonville had brought suit against him for trespass, seeking 5,000 doillars damage. In the same newspaper, The Pontiac Evening Press, Feb 17, 1896, Damon was charged with slandering Helen Bennet, and spent some time boarding with Sheriff Judd for several weeks, at the expense of the complainant, he was released because of her refusal to pay his board any longer.
