Notes
John Axford, pioneer of 1831, was born in Oxford, New Jersey, in 1787 and died in Oakland County, Michigan in 1865. His grandfather, John Hart, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He came to Michigan and settled in Oakland County in 1831 on a farm upon which he lived until he died. he walked the entire distance from New Jersey to the new territory. He took up claims for 300 acres from the government, being guided to his posscessions by blazed trees. Their neighbors were friendly indians of the Tuckatres tribe, who taught him to hunt deer and bear.
